Origin: Apparently a borrowing from French. Etymon: French aérophane.
Etymology: Apparently < French aérophane (not dated in dictionaries of French) < aéro- aero- comb. form + -phane -phane comb. form.
A light semi-transparent silk fabric of the nature of a thin crape or gauze. Now chiefly historical.
