Origin: A borrowing from Maori. Etymon: Maori kōkopuruao.

Etymology: Probably < Maori kōkopuru- (in kōkopuruao banded kokopu), with alteration of the second element after bully n.⁷ 1; compare also Maori kokopara variety of kokopu, any small freshwater fish. Compare kokopu n. (now the more common term in New Zealand English).
