Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: French aglyphe; Latin Aglypha.
Etymology: < (i) French aglyphe, adjective (1859 or earlier), and its etymon (ii) scientific Latin Aglypha (plural noun), suborder name (1858 or earlier ) < a- a- prefix6 + Hellenistic Greek γλυϕή carving (see glyph n.). Compare earlier aglyphous adj.
