Etymology: < post-classical Latin colorificus colour-making (1538 in a British source, or earlier) < classical Latin colori- , alternative stem of color colour n.1 + -ficus -fic suffix. Compare French colorifique (1684 or earlier).In form colorifique after French. N.E.D. (1891) also gives the pronunciation (kǫlŏri·fik) /kɒləˈrɪfɪk/.

colorific acids n. Obsolete (T. Thomson's name for) certain acids which precipitate metallic solutions as highly-coloured powders (see quot. 1807).
