Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Latin. Or (ii) a borrowing from Greek. Etymons: Latin agnosia; Greek ἀγνωσία.
Etymology: < (i) post-classical Latin agnosia ignorance (1764 or earlier), or its etymon (ii) ancient Greek ἀγνωσία ignorance (ἀ- a- prefix6 + γνῶσις knowledge (see gnosis n.) + -ία -ia suffix1). In sense 2 after German Agnosie ( S. Freud Zur Auffassung der Aphasien (1891) 80).
1. Chiefly Theology. Ignorance, lack of knowledge; spec. an awareness of the Divine as transcending the reach of perceptual or conceptual knowledge (cf. gnosis n.).
