Etymology: < post-classical Latin albugineus designating a humour (the aqueous humour) within the eye (from 12th cent. in British sources; from 13th cent. in continental sources) < classical Latin albūgin- , albūgō albugo n. + -eus : see -eous suffix) + -ous suffix. Compare albuginous adj. and French forms cited at that entry.Greek medical writers used ὑδατοειδής hydatoid adj. to designate the aqueous humour; compare aqueous adj.
