Etymology: Origin unknown.A suggested derivation < Gujarati āgrũ, denoting a disease producing halitosis, poses phonological and semantic problems, and no related term is attested in Bengal or further east (compare the areas specified in quot. 1753).
Obsolete. rare.
Apparently: a condition in which the tongue becomes rough and cracked (not identified).

1753 Chambers's Cycl. Suppl. Agrom, a disease frequent in Bengal, and other parts of the Indies, wherein the tongue chaps and cleaves in several places.
1875 G. Gaskoin On Psoriasis or Lepra vi. 111 This gentleman informed me that such a condition of the tongue was in India exceedingly common, and there supposed to depend on the bad quality of the drinking water... I heard since of its frequency in the Indian peninsula, and I also found a mention of it in old books under the name of agrom.
