Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin agynus , -ous suffix.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin agynus without a wife (1673 or earlier; < ancient Greek ἄγυνος < ἀ- a- prefix6 + γυνή woman, female: see -gynous comb. form) + -ous suffix. Compare agynarious adj. and earlier agynary adj.
Botany. Now rare.
Designating a flower which lacks female organs; characteristic of such a flower.
