Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymons: French cousin germain, cousine germaine.
Etymology: Partly (denoting a male cousin) < Anglo-Norman cosin germain, cusin germein, Middle French cousin germain (c1150 in Old French; French cousin germain ; < cousin cousin n. + germain germane adj.), and partly (denoting a female cousin) < Anglo-Norman cosine germaine, Anglo-Norman and Middle French cousine germaine (late 12th cent. in Old French; French cousine germaine ; < cousine cousin n. + germaine , feminine of germain germane adj.). Compare earlier germane cousin at germane adj. 1.Compare Old Occitan cozi german . With the forms with -ing- in the first element compare the β. forms at cousin n. and adj. and the etymological note at that entry. Beside the plural type cousins-german, the type cousins-germans was also common in earlier use.
Now archaic.
1. A child of a full brother or sister of either of one's parents; a first cousin. Cf. cousin n. 1b. Cf. germane cousin at germane adj. 1.In later use often in historical, legal, or technical contexts.Quot. c1380 probably shows tmesis of the compound for metrical reasons, although it could alternatively be interpreted as contextual use of germane (see germane adj. 1).
