释义

aitn.

Brit. /eɪt/, U.S. /eɪt/
Forms:

α. Old English igeað, Old English igeoð, Old English igeþ, Old English iggað, Old English iggeoð, Old English iggoð, Old English ioðe (dative singular, perhaps transmission error), Old English–early Middle English igeð, Old English–early Middle English igoð, late Old English igaþ, late Old English igað, late Old English igþ, early Middle English æit, early Middle English eigt, early Middle English eyth (in copy of Old English charter), early Middle English ygett- (inflected form), Middle English eit, Middle English eyte, Middle English 1600s–1700s eyt, 1500s hayte, 1600s eight, 1600s–1700s eyght, 1600s– ait, 1700s aight, 1700s–1800s ayte, 1800s aayte (English regional (Berkshire)).

β. English regional (Worcestershire) 1600s neite, 1700s–1800s neight, 1800s– naight, 1800s– nait.

Origin: Probably formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: English īeg, -eð.
Etymology: Probably originally < Old English īeg island (see island n.) + -eð, suffix forming diminutives (see -th suffix1), with ending subsequently remodelled after the more common suffixes -oð (see -th suffix1) and (later) -et suffix2. Compare later eyot n.The presumed Anglian Old English form *ēgeð , *ēgoð is apparently not attested. With the development of the stem vowel compare hay n.1 The β. forms show metanalysis (see N n.). Also attested in place names (very commonly of islets in the Thames), as Middileit , Oxfordshire (c1145; now Medley), Boreseyt , Surrey (1232; now Bos Ait), Dockeyte , Middlesex (1377; now Dog Ait), etc. With the β. forms compare lez Neytes, in the Avon, Worcestershire (1544; now Comberton Aits), and probably also (in transferred use) Neyte Hill, Worcestershire (1649; now Neight Hill).
