Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin decisor.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin decisor arbiter (from 12th cent. in British and continental sources; earlier denoting incisor teeth (6th cent.)) < classical Latin dēcīs- , past participial stem of dēcīdere decide v.1 + -or -or suffix. Compare slightly earlier deciser n.In the specific use in Judaism, rendering modern Hebrew pōsēq (already in post-biblical Hebrew in the sense ‘codifier’), use as noun of active participle of pāsaq to cut, to divide, to decide ( < Aramaic pāsaq , in same senses), and formerly also Aramaic sāḇōrā Sabora n.
A person who resolves or settles matters or controversies; a decider, judge, or arbiter. In later use (Judaism): a rabbi who decides matters in Jewish religious law.
