Forms: Formerly also in Latin form diatriba.
Etymology: < French diatribe (15th cent. in Hatzfeld & Darmesteter), < Latin diatriba a learned discussion, a school, < Greek διατριβή a wearing away (of time), employment, study, and (in Plato) discourse, < διατρίβειν to rub through or away. The senses in French and English exactly correspond.
