Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from Greek. Etymons: French ambon; Greek ἄμβων.
Etymology: < (i) French ambon (1680 in the passage translated in quot. 1683 at sense 1, or earlier), and its etymon (ii) ancient Greek ἄμβων crest of a hill, edge or rim of a cup, in Hellenistic Greek also rim of a joint socket (Galen), in Byzantine Greek also pulpit; of uncertain origin, probably a loanword, though connected by ancient authors with ancient Greek ἀναβαίνειν to go up, rise (see anabasis n.). Compare earlier ambo n.1Compare Italian ambone (a1602). In sense 2 after post-classical Latin ambona (1537 or earlier); compare also ambe n. 2.
