单词 | diabetes mellitus |
释义 | diabetes mellitusn. Any of a group of metabolic disorders in which the body’s ability to produce or respond to the hormone insulin is impaired, resulting in abnormal metabolism of carbohydrates and an elevated level of glucose in the blood, and often glucose in the urine. The symptoms of severe diabetes mellitus include frequent urination, excessive thirst, and weight loss, and it may, if untreated, progress to unconsciousness and death. If inadequately treated, it may result in damage to many organs of the body, esp. the kidneys and retina. There are two main types of diabetes mellitus. In the first (type 1, insulin-dependent, or (formerly) juvenile-onset diabetes), there is an absolute deficiency of insulin, usually caused by autoimmune destruction of the beta cells of the pancreatic islets, and treatment with insulin injections is necessary. In the second (type 2, non-insulin-dependent, or (formerly) adult-onset diabetes), the tissues of the body exhibit insulin resistance; treatment with dietary and other lifestyle changes may be sufficient.
