单词 diachylon
释义

diachylondiachylumdiaculumn.

/dʌɪˈakɪlən//dʌɪˈakɪləm/ /daɪˈækjʊləm/
Forms: α. Middle English–1500s diaquilon, 1600s– diachylon, 1700s– diachylum (1800s diaclum); β. Middle English–1800s diaculon, 1500s dyaculome, 1500s– diaculum.
Etymology: < medieval Latin diachylum, diaculon, and Old French diaculon (14th cent.), diaquilon, dyachilon, diachilon (Paré, 16th cent.), Latin diachȳlōn (Celsius), representing Greek διὰ χῡλῶν (a medicament) composed of juices; compare also Greek διάχῡλος very juicy, succulent. The pronunciation with shortened penult comes through French and medieval Latin.
Originally, the name of a kind of ointment composed of vegetable juices; now a common name for lead-plaster, emplastrum plumbi, an adhesive plaster made by boiling together litharge (lead oxide), olive oil, and water; prepared on sheets of linen as a sticking-plaster which adheres when heated.
