Stress is usually determined by a subsequent element and vowels may be reduced accordingly.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin alti-.
Etymology: < classical Latin alti-, combining form (in e.g. altitonāns altitonant adj.) of altus high (see altus n.) and of altē highly; compare -i- connective.Frequent in borrowings from Latin from the 14th cent. onwards (e.g. altimetry n., altitonant n.). Formations within English are found from the mid 16th cent. (e.g. altification n., altify v.). In French alti- is found from the 15th cent., chiefly in borrowings from Latin; occasional independent formations appear from the 19th cent. (e.g. altivole (of a climbing plant) that grows to the top of a tree (1838), altiport altiport n.). Compare also Spanish alti- (in e.g. altiplano altiplano n.).
