Etymology: < Latin type dispensārium , dispensārius (liber ): compare medieval Latin dispensārius (1290 in Fleta = dispensator dispenser n.), and French dispensaire ‘a Dispensatorie, or Booke, that teacheth how to make all Phisicall compositions’ (Cotgrave 1611); < dispens- participial stem of Latin dispendĕre to dispense: see -ary suffix1.
1. A place, room, or shop, in which medicines are dispensed; an apothecary's shop. spec. A charitable institution, where medicines are dispensed and medical advice given gratis, or for a small charge ( charitable or public dispensary).
