Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Danish. Partly a borrowing from German. Etymons: Danish amt; German Amt.
Etymology: Partly (i) < Danish amt, †ampt administrative district (especially with reference to districts established in the administrative reorganization of Denmark in 1662), specific sense of amt office (Old Danish ammet ; < Middle Low German ampt , amt office, administrative district (Old Saxon ambaht ), cognate with Old English ambiht : see amboht n.), and partly (ii) < the related German Amt administrative district, specific sense of German Amt office (Old High German ambaht , Middle High German ambaht , ambt : see amboht n.). Compare earlier amtman n.Compare Icelandic amt (16th cent.), Norwegian amt , both < Danish, denoting administrative districts established while Iceland and Norway were under Danish rule. In plural form Amter (compare quot. 2016) after the German plural form Ämter. Compare the following earlier example of the German compound Steueramt tax office (1619 in this sense) in an English context:1621 True Relation Execution in Prague sig. Bv Iohn Kuttenaw, chiefe Captaine of the Citizens in the olde Citty, and Simon Sussitzszky, Commissary of the Counsel, and of the Stewer-ampt..: both are condemned to be hang'd out of the Window of the Towne-house.
Now chiefly historical.
Chiefly in Denmark, Iceland, Germany, and Norway: an administrative district or subdivision. Cf. amtman n.Amts currently exist only in the German states of Schleswig-Holstein, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, and Brandenburg. They were abolished in Iceland in 1904, in Norway in 1918, and in Denmark in 2007.
