2. slang (originally and chiefly U.S.). Used as a general form of address to a man. From the mid 20th cent frequently in what's up, Doc?, chiefly with more or less direct allusion to Bugs Bunny (see note).The person addressed as ‘Doc’ in quot. 1870 is subsequently referred to later (p. 371) as ‘the doctor’, but seems unlikely to be a medical doctor.The phrase ‘what's up, Doc?’, which had already become a catchphrase by the early 20th century, was popularized through its frequent use by the American cartoon character Bugs Bunny, originally in the short film A Wild Hare (1940), and is now also sometimes used with punning allusion to other senses of doctor n.
