Etymology: < personal surname Doiley or Doyley.1712 E. Budgell Spectator No. 283. ¶18 The famous Doily is still fresh in every one's Memory, who raised a Fortune by finding out Materials for such Stuffs as might at once be cheap and genteel.1728 H. Sloane in Philos. Trans. 1726–7 (Royal Soc.) 34 222 Mr. Doyly, (who was a great searcher after Curiosities, and gave Name to a sort of Stuffs worn in Summer).1750–1800 Pegge MS. Note in Skeat Philol. Trans. (1885) 91 Doyley kept a Linnen-draper's shop in the Strand, a little West of Catherine Street.
