Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: alum n.1, -ium suffix.
Etymology: < alum n.1 + -ium suffix. Compare slightly later aluminium n. and aluminum n.Coined by H. Davy (compare quot. 1808) as his original name for the element. This name was soon superseded by aluminum n., Davy's own alternative coinage, and aluminium n.
