Etymology: < alloxan n. + -ic suffix. In sense 1 after French alloxanique (originally in acide alloxanique (1838 or earlier; itself after German Alloxansäure: F. Wöhler & J. Liebig 1838, in Ann. der Chemie u. Pharmacie 26 294)). In sense 2 after Italian allossanico (1947 or earlier in this sense in diabete allossanico, in a paper by C. Cavallero; compare diabete da allossana (1944 or earlier)). Compare French alloxanique (1947 or earlier in this sense, in diabète alloxanique).
