Etymology: < post-classical Latin amentaceus like a winter bud (1513 or earlier: see note), of the nature of a catkin (1675 or earlier), (of a plant) bearing catkins (1719 in the passage translated in quot. 1754 at sense 2, or earlier; < classical Latin āmentum in its post-classical Latin sense ‘catkin’ (see amentum n.) + -āceus : see -aceous suffix) + -ous suffix.Compare scientific Latin Amentaceae, former family name ( A. L. de Jussieu Genera Plantarum (1789) 407; already 1764 or earlier as a group name; > French amentacées, plural noun (1789 in Jussieu)), French amentacé, adjective (1747 or earlier). In early use post-classical Latin amentaceus translates Hellenistic Greek καχρυώδης like a winter bud (Theophrastus).
