Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French amer.
Etymology: < Anglo-Norman and Middle French amer bitterness (c1174), use as noun of amer bitter (c1139 in Anglo-Norman in sense ‘fierce’; French amer ) < classical Latin amārus bitter (see amarous adj.). With to do amere compare Old French faire amer (1285).
Obsolete. rare.
Only in to do amere: to do bitter things to, inflict bitter wounds upon.
