单词 | electroendosmosis |
释义 | electroendosmosisn. Chemistry. The migration of water, esp. through a semipermeable membrane, in response to an electrical gradient (cf. electro-osmosis n.). Now spec.: the movement of water towards the cathode during electrophoresis. ΚΠ 1913 Chem. Abstr. 7 1675 In contradiction to the electroendosmosis theory of Erich Müller, the authors believe that the adsorption of these colloidal metal hydrates on the electrode forms a kind of net or mesh. 1916 Bot. Gaz. 62 332 This semipermeability [of a membrane] toward one ion leads to a difference of potential, an electric current is established, and water moves across the membrane by electroendosmosis. 1940 G. H. J. Adlam & L. S. Price Higher School Certificate Inorg. Chem. (ed. 2) xi. 71 The suspended particles cannot now move towards either electrode, but the liquid itself moves. This movement, when the disperse phase is rendered immobile, is called..electro-endosmosis. 1970 Proc. Royal Soc. A. 316 510 In all electrophoretic work, electroendosmosis is more or less of a problem. 1992 Public Wks. Jan. 40/2 Moisture is driven into paint films by..hydrophilic components (salt, solvents, etc.) in the film or on the steel; or by electrical gradients such as electroendosmosis. 2005 R. Westermeier Electrophoresis in Pract. (ed. 4) i. 7 In capillary electrophoresis mostly the term ‘electroosmotic flow’ is applied, the term ‘electroendosmosis’ is only used in gel electrophoresis. This is a new entry (OED Third Edition, June 2008; most recently modified version published online March 2022). < n.1913 |
