释义

electric fluidn.

Brit. /ᵻˌlɛktrɪk ˈfluːɪd/, U.S. /əˌlɛktrɪk ˈfluɪd/, /iˌlɛktrɪk ˈfluɪd/
Forms: see electric adj. and n. and fluid adj. and n.
Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: electric adj., fluid adj.
Etymology: < electric adj. + fluid adj.
Now historical.
A subtle, imponderable, all-pervading fluid that was formerly thought to be the cause of electrical phenomena. Also figurative. Cf. earlier electric fire n. 1.In the view of Benjamin Franklin, an excess of the fluid gave rise to positive electricity, and a deficiency to negative electricity (hence the terms ‘positive’ and ‘negative’). Other writers thought that the two kinds of electricity corresponded to two different fluids.
