Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French epicarpe.
Etymology: < French epicarpe (1808 in the passage translated in quot. 1819; now épicarpe ) < epi- epi- prefix + -carpe -carp comb. form. Compare scientific Latin epicarpium (1808 in the source of quot. 1819).
Botany.
The outermost layer of the pericarp of a fruit; the skin, rind, or peel. Cf. endocarp n., mesocarp n.
