Etymology: < scientific Latlin entomo- (in e.g. entomologia entomology n.) < ancient Greek ἔντομον (noun), usually in plural, ἔντομα , use as noun (short for ἔντομα ζῷα cut-up creatures) of neuter of ἔντομος (adjective) cut up ( < εν- en- prefix2 + -τομος : see -tome comb. form), with reference to the division of their bodies into segments (compare classical Latin insectum : see insect n.); compare -o- connective.Compare French entomo-, German entomo-, Italian entomo-.
Occurring with sense ‘insect’ in many scientific compounds of modern formation.
