Etymology: < ant n.1 + eater n. Compare German Ameisenfresser (1644 in sense 1a). With sense 1 compare earlier ant bear n. With sense 2 compare earlier ant-catcher n. at ant n.1 Compounds 2 and ant-thrush n.
1. Any of several ant- and termite-eating mammals with extremely long, thin, retractable tongues.
a. (a) A hairy mammal of the South American suborder Vermilingua (superorder Xenarthra, families Myrmecophagidae and Cyclopedidae), as the giant anteater, Myrmecophaga tridactyla; (b) (in full scaly anteater) the pangolin (genus Manis) of parts of Asia and Africa; (c) (in full Cape anteater) the aardvark, Orycteropus afer. Also figurative.
