Etymology: Old English feorran , feorrane , feorrene , corresponding to Old Saxon ferrana , ferran , Old High German ferrana , -no , < Old Germanic *ferr- far adv. The adjective appears first in 12th cent.; its development from the adverb is paralleled in the modern German fern.
