Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Flehmen.
Etymology: < German Flehmen (mainly of horses) curling of the lip (in sexual excitement) (K. M. Schneider Zool. Garten (1930) 3 184).
A behaviour seen in many mammals in response to certain olfactory stimuli, esp. sex pheromones, characterized by a curling of the upper lip and a raising of the head. Frequently attributive, esp. in flehmen response.

1962 J. A. R. A. M. Van Hooff in Symposia Zool. Soc. No. 8. 118 Schneider..thought of it as a careful ‘tasting’ of the smell and called it ‘Flehmen’. Failing an English translation, this word will be borrowed to name this facial posture.]
