Origin: A borrowing from Greek. Etymon: Greek ἀνθέμιον.
Etymology: < ancient Greek ἀνθέμιον pattern of floral motifs on Ionic columns, in Hellenistic Greek also flower < ἀνθέμον flower ( < the same base as ἄνθος flower (see anthos n.) + -εμον , ending also seen in ἄργεμον : see argema n.) + -ιον, suffix forming nouns.In plural form anthemia after the Greek plural form.
Decorative Arts.
An ornamental design consisting of a chain of alternating floral motifs, often stylized lotus flowers or palmettes.
