Origin: A borrowing from Cornish. Etymon: Cornish foge.
Etymology: < Cornish foge (Middle Cornish fok hearth) < post-classical Latin focus focus n. N.E.D. (1897) gives the pronunciation as (fōudʒ) /fəʊdʒ/, apparently based on their suggestion that the word might reflect a regional pronunciation of forge n.
Mining. English regional (Cornwall). Obsolete.
A building in which tin is smelted.Not fully naturalized in English. Only recorded in glossaries of the dialect of bilingual Cornwall (in quot. 1754 as a word in Cornish, in quot. 1778 apparently as an English word used in Cornwall).
