Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: Greek γαλακτ- , γάλα , -in suffix1.
Etymology: < ancient Greek γαλακτ-, γάλα milk (see galactic adj.) + -in suffix1.In sense 2a after German †Galactin (1821 or earlier; now Galaktin ). In senses 2b and 3a after French galactine a gelatinous substance found in milk (A. Morin 1854, in Jrnl. de pharm. et de chim. 25 434), a polysaccharide extracted from the seeds of lucerne (A. Muntz 1882, in Comptes rendus hebd. de l'Acad. des Sci. 94 454).
Chemistry and Biochemistry.
1. A white substance isolated from the latex of the cow tree of South America, Brosimum utile (family Moraceae). Obsolete.
