Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymons: French archiduc, archeduc.
Etymology: < Middle French, French archiduc (1486), †archeduc (1504 or earlier) < post-classical Latin archiduc- , archidux (10th cent.; from 15th cent. in British sources) < classical Latin archi- archi- prefix + dux duke n.
Now chiefly historical.

Later more usually: (the title of) a son of one of the Holy Roman Emperors of the Habsburg dynasty, or subsequently of the Emperor of Austria (or Austria–Hungary). Cf. Grand Duke n. 1.The title was granted by the Holy Roman Emperor to rulers of Habsburg territories within the Empire in the 15th cent. and was applied more generally to male members of the Habsburg dynasty from the 16th cent. Some members of the Habsburg family continue to use the title unofficially (see, e.g., quot. 1989), although it was legally abolished in 1919. The King of Spain also nominally holds the title of Archduke of Austria.
