Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; originally modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: geo- comb. form, thermometer n.
Etymology: < geo- comb. form + thermometer n., in sense 1 after German Geothermometer (G. Magnus 1831, in Ann. der Physik u. Chem. 22 137; also Erdthermometer, in the same source).
Geology.
1. A thermometer for measuring temperatures in the earth's crust. Now rare.
