With plural agreement: a small phylum of minute aquatic invertebrates having a short worm-like body bearing cilia, bristles, and posterior adhesive organs; (also) animals of this phylum (collectively or individually).The Gastrotricha are thought to be related to rotifers and nematodes, and they were formerly regarded as a class of the phylum Aschelminthes. Animal Geogr. iii. 26 Fresh-water fishes, protozoans (especially ciliates), rotifers, and Gastrotricha have found the fresh-water environment favorable. 1953 H.
