Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Geognost.
Etymology: < German (now historical) Geognost (1788 or earlier) < German geo- geo- comb. form + Hellenistic Greek γνώστης person who knows (see prognostes n.). Compare French (now historical) géognoste (1803 or earlier). Compare earlier geognostic adj., geognostical adj., and also earlier geognosist n.
Now historical.
