Etymology: < gin n.3 + and conj.1 + tonic n.
A drink made with gin and tonic water poured over ice, and usually garnished with a slice of lemon or lime.Gin and tonic was introduced in the British army in India in the 19th cent. as a way of making the antimalarial quinine more palatable, by mixing it with gin and adding water, sugar, and lime. No longer used as an antimalarial, tonic water today contains much less quinine and is consequently less bitter.
