Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name Goodwood.
Etymology: < the name of Goodwood Park, Sussex, where an annual race meeting has been held since the beginning of the 19th cent.The race meeting was established by the third Duke of Richmond on his estate at Goodwood Park in 1801. As the Duke was a colonel in the Sussex Militia, he invited the local militia officers to hold a race on his land after they had been expelled from nearby Petworth Park by the Earl of Egremont.
