Etymology: Either < Italian governatrice (1300; < classical Latin gubernātrīc- , gubernātrīx gubernatrix n.), or an alteration (after nouns in -trice suffix) of governator n. Compare earlier gubernatrice n. and later governatrix n., gubernatrix n.
