Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: antique n., -ist suffix.
Etymology: < antique n. + -ist suffix. Compare earlier antiquarian n., antiquary n., antiquitarian n. 2.The pronunciation with first-syllable stress and medial /-kw-/ is apparently influenced by antiquary n.; it is recorded from at least the late 19th cent.
