Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymons: French haquebute, haquebuse.

Etymology: < Middle French haquebute (1470), haquebouthe (1481), alteration of haquebuse, harquebuse (see arquebus n. and compare hackbush n.), probably after buter to aim (a gun at a target), to take aim (see butt v.¹). In later use (within English) also sometimes associated with butt n.⁶ Compare earlier hackbush n. and also arquebus n.Forms with l (e.g. halkbut at α. forms) are reverse spellings reflecting an Older Scots pronunciation with a glide before k (seen in e.g. hawkbut), as a result of earlier vocalization of l.
