单词 hagarene
释义

Hagarenen.adj.

Brit. /ˌhaɡəˈriːn/, U.S. /ˌhæɡəˈrin/
Forms:

α. Old English Agareni (plural), Old English Agarreni (plural), Middle English Agarien, Middle English–1600s Agarene, 1500s Agarine, 1500s–1600s Agaren, 1500s–1600s Agarin.

β. 1500s–1600s Hagaren, 1500s–1600s 1900s Hagarine, 1500s– Hagarene, 1600s Hagarin.

Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Agarenus.
Etymology: Originally (in α. forms) < post-classical Latin Agarenus descendant of Hagar (Vulgate), Arab, Muslim person (8th cent. in British and continental sources) < Agar (Hellenistic Greek Ἀγαρ , Hebrew Hāḡār ), the name of the concubine of Abraham who became the mother of Ishmael (Genesis 16) + classical Latin -ēnus -ene suffix. The β. forms show remodelling after Hagar, the now usual English form of the personal name ( < Hebrew). With use as noun compare Middle French Agarene , French Agarène (1543 or earlier), Hellenistic Greek Ἀγαρενοί , plural (Septuagint). With use as adjective compare Middle French Agarene (1552 in Rabelais in langue Agarene , probably in the sense ‘(Ottoman) Turkish’). The name of the biblical figure is attested in Old English and Middle English as Agar , and from the 16th cent. as Hagar . Specific forms. The Old English forms Agareni , Agarreni (see the α. forms) are after Latin Agareni, nominative plural. With the forms in -in and -ine compare -ine suffix1.
Now historical.
