Etymology: < the name of John, first Baron Harington of Exton (c1540–1613).‘Now [1613] my lord Harrington obtained a Patent from the King for the making of Brasse Farthings, a thing that brought with it some contempt though lawfull.’ Spark 1st 14 Years Jas. I (1651) i. xxix. 56.

Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name Harrington.
Etymology: < the name of Rodney Harrington, a character featured in the U.S. television series Peyton Place (first broadcast in 1964), who wore this type of jacket.
A short, lightweight jacket with a collar and zipped front, typically with a tartan or check-patterned lining. Also more fully Harrington coat, Harrington jacket. This style of jacket was made popular in the United Kingdom in the 1960s by mods and skinheads.
