单词 hensure
释义

hensuren.

Forms: pre-1700 hensour, pre-1700 1800s hensure.
Etymology: Origin unknown. Perhaps < hens- (variant of hench- in henchman n., henchboy n.) + -our suffix, although the spelling in -ure is difficult to explain.Jamieson’s suggestion that the word means ‘giddy young fellow’ and is to be derived from early Scandinavian (compare Old Icelandic heimskr (Icelandic heimskur), Old Swedish hemsker (Swedish regional hemmsk), Old Danish hemsk, all in the sense ‘stupid, gullible’) is unconvincing.
Scottish. Obsolete (archaic in later use).
Meaning uncertain: perhaps originally ‘a retainer’ and in later use ‘a swaggering young man’.
