HM Paymaster General
Originally: the official in overall charge of disbursements for any organization or area encompassing several smaller units. From 1835 (more fully HM Paymaster General): the head of the office which acts as the paying agent of the British Government, formally authorizing the payment of wages, pensions, etc. Hence: an official with similar responsibilities in another country or jurisdiction. The role of the Paymaster General has varied with different governments, and new areas of responsibility may be assigned by the Prime Minister. The Paymaster General is sometimes a cabinet minister and sometimes has non-Treasury ministerial responsibility assigned to him. The paymaster (financial) functions are performed by a separate team of Treasury officials.
