单词 | archaeomagnetism |
释义 | archaeomagnetismn. Archaeology. Magnetism remaining in an archaeological structure or artefact of clay or stone which has been subjected to intense heat at some point in the past; the field of study concerned with such magnetism, esp. as a means of dating hearths, kilns, furnaces, or other archaeological remains. Cf. palaeomagnetism n.When clay or stone which has been subjected to intense heat cools below the Curie temperature (curie temperature n. at curie n. 2), the magnetism of any iron-rich components becomes fixed in alignment with the earth's magnetic field at that moment. The earth’s magnetic field at any given place varies in direction and intensity over time; therefore, if the location and orientation of the structure or artefact during cooling are known, the magnetism remaining in the material can be used to study the history of the earth's magnetic field or for archaeological dating.
