Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English lexical item. Etymons: homo n.1, Latin oeconomicus.
Etymology: < homo n.1 (compare homo n.1 2b) + classical Latin oeconomicus economic adj., after Homo sapiens n. The phrase homo economicus is attested earlier in a French context (1878) and slightly later in Italian and German contexts (1887 and 1890 respectively). Compare earlier economical man n. at economical adj. Compounds; compare also slightly later economic man n. at economic n. and adj. Compounds.
