Etymology: neuter plural (sc. scripta ) of late Latin adjective apocryphus, < Greek ἀπόκρυϕος hidden, (hence) of unknown authorship, spurious, < ἀποκρύπτειν to hide away. Formerly used (in plural apocrypha , singular apocryphum ) as adjective. As noun, still properly treated as a plural, with singular of Greek form apocryphon ; but in common usage apocrypha is singular with plural apocryphas . In this sense apocryphy was also formerly in use. Compare apocrypha v.
